Whether you've moved to a new area, grown weary of your current hairdresser or just fancy a change, now may be the time to find a new salon. Here are seven steps to choosing the right one.

1. Start by drawing up a list of all the hairdressers in your area and use this as a shortlist.

2. Next, speak to your friends and relatives about where they go to get their haircut and whether they recommend the salon.

3. Narrow your search by identifying which salons will be easy for you to get to and which won't be.

4. Visit the websites or call up to find out the price list for the salon. Make sure it's within your price range and that, for your budget, you will have access to the best stylists.

5. Once you're satisfied with the location and price list of a couple of salons, arrange to call in for a free consultation. Discuss what you're looking for with the stylist and see what they have to say.

6. Are you happy with the salon itself? How about the levels of service they're offering or the equipment they will be using?

7. Think about what you've been told and make sure you're satisfied with the salon. Once you're happy, ask for an appointment time with one of the hairdressers. You'll want to find one that has enough availability to fit you in, but not so many free timeslots that they are suspiciously quiet.
